8 Tips to Improve Your Work/Life Balance
With so much going on in our lives, it can sometimes be extremely difficult to find a good balance between our full-time jobs, our lives outside of work and the people and hobbies we love.
Months ago, when we were getting ready to ring in the new year, I decided to try something new and set a “word of the year.” My word: BALANCE. Work/life balance is something I never really thought about until recently, but I quickly realized just how big of an impact it can have on your mood, your day-to-day life and your goals.
I’ve been spending the past few months trying to incorporate a bunch of different aspects into my routine to strike an incredible work/life balance and I. Am. Loving. It. I’ve been exercising more, eating better, doing FUN and inspiring things, taking up new hobbies, spending time with loved ones and just feeling generally happier. What more could ya ask for?!
Now, I want you to do the same! If you feel like work/life balance is something you’re struggling with, then this one is for you, girlfriend! And even if you feel like you have that on lock, you may learn a thing or two that’ll help you improve your life balance even more.
Take small breaks throughout the day
Eight hours is quite a long time to be staring at a computer screen and I know I’m not the only one who starts feeling the negative side effects of that by about 3 P.M. each day! If you feel your eyes straining, your shoulders tensing up or your brainpower dwindling, it might be a good time for a ten-minute break.
Take a quick lap around your office, stretch out right at your desk or just stand outside for a few minutes and enjoy the weather! Not only will you feel recharged and energized to get back to work afterwards, but this will also improve your entire day by allowing yourself to take the time you need to get back on track.
2. Leave the day at the office
Obviously talking about the place that we spend eight hours each day is just unavoidable, and that’s totally fine! But what we shouldn’t do is bring home any negative feelings that we may have encountered throughout the day (including stress!).
Try to utilize your commute home to clear your mind and get a fresh start to the evening. Blast some fun music, put the windows down and get in a good mood, girlfriend, because you still have the whole night ahead of you!
3. Plan “me” days, fun adventure days or totally-relax-and-watch-Netflix-all-day days
I’m the first to admit that even on the weekends, I like to be as productive as possible, whether that entails exercising, blogging or just planning for the week ahead. However, I know that I also need to make time for the things that make me happy (and keep me sane!).
If you’re starting to feel burnt out and realize that it’s only Wednesday, make a promise to yourself that you’ll spend at least one day this weekend just RELAXING. Binge watch your favorite shows, get a mani/pedi, or go for a fun hike with friends or your S.O. Whatever you do, make sure to give yourself the self-care day that you need!
Set a variety of goals
This year, I started doing something new with my goals by breaking them down into “health,” “work,” and “happiness/life” categories. It’s great because each month, I’m basically forcing myself to set fun goals in the “life” category since for me, that’s what life is all about! Some of my life goals include reading books, learning hand-lettering and doing yoga, so these are things that I make sure I spend time on each month. This majorly helps me de-stress and stay balanced!
Take some time to think about what categories you can break your 2018 goals down to — and make sure to include a category that will inspire you to do things outside of work!
Start or end your day with inspiring or fun tasks
Are you a morning girl or a night owl? Either way, take advantage of that quality of yours and make time for inspiring tasks or fun hobbies at that time. Personally, I’ve always been a morning lover so lately, I’ve started making time to go the gym in the mornings, have a healthy breakfast, plan for the day ahead and even get some blogging done!
Starting your mornings (or ending your nights!) with things you LOVE doing and things that make you feel productive outside of work will seriously inspire you to keep doing what you love and what makes you feel good.
Don’t just live for the weekend
Isn’t it crazy that we do this?! We work work work all week long and just look forward to TWO days out of the week… and then they FLY by and we do it all over again! I recently realized how insane this is and have tried to remedy it by making my weekdays as fun and inspiring as my weekends are.
Is there a hobby you love doing or something new you want to learn? Practice it after you get home from work! Have some old friends you want to catch up with? Plan a Wednesday night dinner! Living for the weekends will only make your work weeks go that much slower — imagine how much better balanced your life will feel if you incorporate the things you love into your daily routine!
Don’t worry, this doesn’t have to be some serious half-hour-long task each night in which you write paragraphs and paragraphs about your day. All I’m sayin is that if you spend ten minutes each night listing out what you spent time on that day, at the end of the week, you’ll have a pretty good idea of how much time you’re spending on work, on hobbies, on things you love, on things you hate, just being lazy, and spending time with the people who mean most to you. And I’m pretty sure you might be surprised by what you find.
Try it out this week — take ten minutes each night to list out how much time you spent on everything and be honest with yourself! A 4-hour long Netflix binge this week might just be the motivating factor on you having an insanely inspiring and productive weekend.
Don’t fall into a rut
When working a full-time job, it’s way too easy to fall into a not-so-great routine of waking up, going to work, coming home, going to bed and doing it all over. Trust me, I’ve been there and it took me a long time to get out of it.
If you feel yourself falling into a rut, try to spice up your routine with things outside of work. Try out a new gym class, hit up a few stores on your way home from work, spend time with friends, or pick up a new hobby. Anything you can think of that might inspire a new and fun routine will work!
