The Anatomy Of A Great Goal


When it comes to creating a goal that we really truly want to accomplish, we’re told to make it ‘smart’ — specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and timely. And while these are certainly standards that we should uphold for each of our goals, I personally think there’s a bit more that goes into creating goals that truly motivate us.

Here are a few things that I always keep in mind when setting new goals, to ensure that I’m setting myself up for success as much as possible!



If your goals don’t inspire you then what’s the point?! I don’t just want a goal that’s going to be relevant and specific… I want one that’s going to make me jump out of bed in the morning and instantly inspire me to get to it.

How do you make a goal that does this? Spend time considering WHY this goal is so important to you and write down a ‘mission statement’ of sorts about why and how you’re going to accomplish this goal. Look over it every morning and I guarantee you’ll feel motivated to reach that goal in no time.


While setting really big goals for ourselves can be a great thing, it can also be our downfall when it comes to actually accomplishing them. We may have the mentality that we’ll never be able to lose 25 pounds or start waking up at 5 A.M. or start our own business or any other gigantic goal you may set for yourself since it just seems so far away from the present moment.

That’s why you have to make your goals easy to digest and simple to break down. Want to lose 25 pounds this year? Well, you just gotta lose 2 or 3 pounds each month. Want to wake up at 5 A.M. on weekdays? Push your alarm clock back in increments each week until it happens naturally. Want to start a business? Start out by developing a strong business plan, then go from there! That all sounds easy enough, right?!

Those big crazy goals won’t seem so big and crazy when you figure out how they can be broken down on a month-to-month or day-to-day basis. And that will make it SO much easier to accomplish the goals that scare you most.


Don’t get me wrong here — I totally think it’s important to spend time setting the right goals for ourselves so that we can pretty much set them in stone and start working towards them.

But sometimes, our motivations, ambitions and lives change, and we have to be able to adapt our goals along with that. We may be working towards a goal and eventually realize that it just doesn’t work for us, or maybe isn’t something we truly want. And that’s okay!

If this does happen, take the time to figure out how you can revamp your goal to work for you again. Don’t just give up completely because Plan A didn’t work! Come up with a new plan of action and be willing to change your mindset about how you can accomplish it.
