5 Secrets to A Successful Social Media Detox


By now, you already know I’m all about taking a little break from social media when necessary! A social media detox can help us feel more productive, aligned and most importantly: HAPPY.

I think that most people these days (unfortunately!) have a slight addiction to social media whether we want to admit it or not… which is why August is all about taking a step back and implementing healthier habits with social media for the long-term.

Today I’m so excited to share my five secrets to a successful social media detox!


5 Secrets to A Successful Social Media Detox

1. Unfollow accounts that don’t inspire you

Before you begin your social media detox or after you’re ready to come back from it, one major step is unfollowing accounts that don’t inspire you, teach you new things, or make you feel happy.

This is a time-consuming task, I know, but I guarantee it’s worth it. Imagine logging into Instagram and only seeing photos or stories that put a smile on your face and make you feel motivated. Doesn’t that sound incredible?!

An added benefit of doing so is that by following less accounts, you’ll automatically spend less time scrolling through your feeds – an instant relief from having to keep up with every person you’ve ever met and wasting hours upon hours in the process.

2. Move all apps to a folder in your phone

When I’m ready to start my social media detox, the first thing I do is move all apps into a separate folder on my phone – a big change from where they are typically located on the bottom of my iPhone, accessible from any homepage I’m on!

By simply keeping these apps out of sight, you’ll trick your brain into thinking you don’t need to log into them. How many times have you unlocked your phone and opened an app out of sheer boredom even though you just checked it five minutes ago? You’ll no longer feel as compelled to do so if the apps are stored away in a spot that’s not as easy to get to!


3. Have other tasks ready

Go into a social media detox knowing what you hope to get out of it and what you hope to accomplish in the meantime. Social media breaks are especially great during those times when you have a big project or task that you want to accomplish, but they also work well when you just need some time away from it!

Either way, knowing what you’ll do to avoid going on social media will make it even easier: if it’s not a big project, then have some ideas ready like reading a great book, organizing your closet, working on creating routines or having some self-care days.


4. Out of sight, out of mind!

An obvious but effective way to stick with your detox is to just keep your phone out of sight! Whether you’re at work or at home, keeping your phone out of the way will help you focus on other tasks and stay off social media.

I also like to turn all social media notifications off during my social media detox and keep my phone’s ringer on. This way, if it goes off, I know it’s a text message, email or call that I can happily look at and I don’t have to worry about seeing notifications from social media that might entice me to log into the apps.

Make this process as easy for yourself as possible by turning off notifications and keeping your phone out of your hands as much as possible!

5. Remember the benefits and your 'why'

The main thing that will propel you through your social media detox is just remembering why you started in the first place! Did you feel like you were spending to much time on the apps? Getting sucked into the comparison game? Just not feeling inspired by having to keep up with every single person, all the time?

Remember what you hope to gain from completing your social media detox and why you were inspired to do so in the first place, and the days during your break will fly by!
