5 Reasons to Ditch Your Awful Alarm Clock
Let’s dive right in, I know you just read the title of this blog post and thought to yourself “uh I have a job to get to in the morning, how would I possibly ditch my alarm clock?” Well… hear me out and I promise you won’t regret it.
In a book I mentioned to the babes on my email list earlier this month, (the book is called My Morning Routine), Arianna Huffington (Kween of Sleep) says:
“Just think about the definition of the word ‘alarm’: ‘a sudden fear or distressing suspense caused by an awareness of danger; apprehension; fright,’ or ‘any sound, outcry, or information intended to warn of approaching danger.’ So an alarm, in most situations, is a signal that something is not right. Yet most of us rely on some kind of alarm clock, a knee-jerk call to arms, to start the day…”
By definition, we’re literally starting our days off with sudden fear and distress. Tell me you agree that it’s insane?!
Once I realized that maybe my alarm clock could be playing into the brutal and incredibly slow start to my mornings, I knew I had to figure out a different method. But seeing as one of my goals for this year is to start waking up at 5 A.M., I also knew I’d need some sort of wake up call and structure to get me there.
I found a great solution for me (I’ll explain soon), and while it may or may not be the solution for you too, there are some things we can do to make our mornings start off infinitely better. The most important – ditching our awful alarm clocks.
I was a little surprised when this thought popped into my mind, too, don’t worry. “Ditch the alarm clock??? You do remember you need to leave for work at 7:30 A.M. right girlfriend?” – my literal thoughts. Yep, I was a little nervous the first night I switched that alarm on my phone to ‘off’ but that following morning changed my mind immediately.
So today I’m sharing five reasons that ditching my alarm was the best thing I’ve ever done, and why you need to start considering it like. right now.
Five Reasons to Ditch Your Alarm Clock
1. There are way better methods of waking up than a blaring alarm clock
When I decided to ditch my alarm and start looking into other options, I came across the Philips Somneo Sleep and Wake-Up Light. And girl, I am so glad I did. This thing transforms your wake up call from nightmare to peaceful and will help you start your morning off in a relaxed and inspired way.
Quick facts on the wake up light:
Simulates the sunrise to help you wake up naturally
Simulates the sunset to help you prepare for sleep
Light-guided breathing to help you relax before sleep
Offers a few peaceful, nature-inspired sound options and varying brightness levels to wake up to
Soft red light to guide you in the dark (so you won’t have to look at your phone to turn on the flashlight when you have to use the bathroom in the middle of the night!)
88% of users say that the wake-up light is a better way to wake up than how they did before; 92% of users find it easier to get out of bed
If you’re not so into the idea of a wake-up light, you can experiment with other methods like using a calming or soothing song (try Love Me Like You Do by Brooklyn Duo) as the tone so at least you won’t be woken up by such a startling noise.
2. You’ll wake up more naturally and learn to rely less and less on the alarm
Believe it or not, I’ve even been waking up earlier on the weekends because my body is getting used to being an early riser – and the reason for that is because I’m not fighting it! By the time my room is lit up and my alarm starts softly playing, I feel ready to get out of bed and start my day.
Waking up naturally at a reasonable hour in the morning is such a great feeling – it sets our day up for productivity and we are more inclined to feel motivated to accomplish anything and everything that comes our way! Once you ditch the wake up call and no longer have the urge to stay cuddled up in bed even after the awful alarm goes off, you’ll become addicted to mornings.
3. You’ll feel less inclined to snooze
I’m convinced that the reason we all feel inclined to snooze so often is because our wake up calls are just so brutal. We’re shocked out of our sleep, rather than coming out of it naturally, so we’re more likely to feel groggy and grumpy.
Waking up in a more natural and peaceful way can help you avoid hitting that snooze button! Think about it – on those great days when you wake up feeling refreshed and like you just had a GREAT night sleep, you’re ready to get at the day and wouldn’t even think about hitting snooze right? Every morning can feel like that if you just find a better method than the awful alarm!
4. You won’t find yourself in that awkward awake-but-still-sleeping-but-waiting-for-the-alarm-to-go-off stage
You know what I’m talking about… the mornings when you’re just laying there in dread waiting to hear the alarm start blaring. I actually used to have nights when I would wake up in the middle of the night, have no clue what time it was, and start to feel anxious that I would hear that sound any minute. Who wants to feel like that?!
Once you find a more peaceful method of waking up, you’ll stop dreading it and actually start looking forward to it. Even if you do happen to wake up in the middle of the night, you’ll probably be able to fall asleep easier knowing that you don’t have to be scared sh*tless by your wake up call in a few hours.
5. A morning without an alarm clock is the most peaceful feeling you’ll ever experience
